Most sunny afternoons during the summer, we had a visit from this groundhog. Around 3 PM he would come out and sit on the stone fence and sun himself. Positions along the fence would change but he would hang around for an hour or so as long as we didn’t disturb him or her.
Just as the chipmunks have their tunnels all through the front lawn, the groundhog digs his in the side gardens.
‘No matter how hard we try to make it our world, in the country, we are in THEIR world’.
The large brown burrower, also called a woodchuck, has dug a number of wide tunnels, in the three tier garden. I now hesitate to get up and maintain this area, as I figure one day I will probably sink, into his world, as the ground crumbles apart beneath me!
We fill the garden entrances and he makes another or redigs. This continues into fall. We aren’t sure who the winner is, but I think we are losing the battle. Anyways, right now he is asleep for the winter, so all is quiet. Just waiting for spring to arrive and he whispers – I‘m back!
looking forward to see this guy again
