Bluejays and other birds love to eat berries in the fall to bulk up for the winter.
This jay landed in the birdbath, sat and would slowly start tipping over, mouth wide open, go down toward the water and then stop midair, without actually touching the water, sit up again. This process repeated itself a number of times.
At first we got worried that he was hurt but after about 3 or 4 minutes he sat right up, hopped around and then took off.
I had never seen anything like this before so I got onto Google and found out the answer. Too many berries at once will intoxicate the birds.
There are no berries left close to the house but what we did have is a fence line full of grape vines that were ripe. Usually I pick them for grape jam but this year the Japanese beetles had themselves a feast on the leaves, so I left the crop for the birds.
Next time you drink too much wine… remember the Bluejays………
