The temperatures have been really cold this year, some days dropping into the minus 30’s °C…. and the birds still come to the feeders for their daily meals.
We now have called ourselves, “Rick and Barbs Fly In’, as the birds are non stop all day sometimes showing up in flocks.
How do the littlest of birds stay warm?
What actually happens is that when they fluff their feathers, they are making pockets of air bubbles under their wings which act as insulation. Each time they move, the action is repeated. On these really cold days, you can sit watch them do this.
The photos today show the birds in this state. Enjoy!
